Adobe RGB is much father from the "typical" behavior of a display on either
platform. Also you say you're converting TO sRGB but from what? You made a
guess.

I have years of legacy files, made on PressViews that wouldn't produce the
same results. But the bottom line is you got a bunch of RGB numbers with no
profile and you made a guess and if you are happy with the guess, far be it
for me to say it's incorrect. I have files going back to 1990 that would
preview much better with ColorMatch RGB as an assumption than sRGB!

You are assuming that the file is being viewed on a 2.2 gamma corrected
display which is fine but most legacy files from a Mac were never corrected
that way. We are playing a guessing game here.
If you or I could be king of the world and demand that ALL users set their
displays to a 2.2 gamma, you'd be onto something. But that's not what the
vast majority of Mac displays were set for and that's why I suggest that if
you can only make one guess, guess 1.8 and something close to Apple RGB or
ColorMatch.
Now the question I've asked here many times and never got an answer is why
on earth did Apple not clean the slate with OSX and simply make the OS a 2.2
gamma like the rest of the world?
