Dean,
Here's the deal. I just come back from a profiling session on the Oki9500
this afternoon. After profiling the Oki, I can affirm that the Oki has a
larger gamut size than the 7700 -- no question. But its screen technology is
not as smooth as the Phaser's. So it's a compromise. I think that the
smoothness of the image formation out of the Xerox outweighs the
attractiveness of the Oki's larger gamut size (much better reds). In my
opinion. Within the last week I have tested both printers, ran the same
images on both printers and found that both printers have the same set of
color management controls. Bottom line: Xerox's magenta is lamentable, way
much less saturated than the Oki's but the Oki's screen are too coarse for
graphic design proofing. I've heard that the Oki has some advanced controls,
somewhere, to compensate for the moiri effect (not sure what to attribute
the moiri appearance of the Oki's screens to?) but the Xerox has perfect
screen right off the bat.
So, I don't think you've made a mistake by choosing the Xerox. As a matter
of fact, I am going to have to make the same recommendation to my
university. Because the Oki's screens are unacceptable for high-end
graphics. Maybe the unit I've tested was not in tip-top shape and it's
possible to obtain better quality out of the engine but I don't have the
time to do the extra research involved.

That being said, is anyone here able to give their views on the 7700? What

7700DN? Can it be color managed? Is it even worth trying to do so?
