Based on what you've told us, I'd say they were about right! If the soft
proof matches the final output (same space/profile used in both cases),
that's what's supposed to happen. Remember, if your output color space is
significantly smaller than your working/editing space, it would be
impossible to match one to the other, the colors just aren't there to be
had. The whole point of the soft proof is to be able to predict what the
final result will look like so if you need to apply any more edits to get it
"better", you can do so without so much guess work. You're success with
editing the soft proof to more closely match your original working space
will largely depend on how close the output space matches your working space
in the first place. (sounds like there's a poem in there somewhere but it
escapes me).
