Custom Profiles and Soft Proofs

Hi,

If my monitor is properly calibrated, should the soft proof view (Photoshop
6, Proof Setup>Custom>Profile:my custom profile) of an image be the same or
very very close to the normal screen view of that image? And then should
the print look very very similar to the soft proof view and thus similar to
the regular view on my monitor? I print scanned photo files through PS6 to
an Epson 10000 with pigment inks.

I was told by a small custom profiling outfit that if my soft proof looked
the same as my print output, I was getting all I could expect, even if the
soft proof didn't look like the monitor image I worked so hard to get the
way I wanted it. This seems ridiculous to me. Thanks,

Tom Andrews
