Most of the LCD capable calibrators out there are Spyders, so most of the
complaints you see on the topic will be about Spyders. I wouldn't let a
personal report be your deciding factor, there are lots of happy Spyder owners out
there.

Basically, can I get away with a software/hardware solution for my

I don't think so; chances are you won't really need to profile either your
scanner or your camera. Start by getting a monitor profiling system, use that
profile in your scanning interface, and for adjustments in Photoshop, open your
10D images through CameraRAW, and see where that gets you. For most users,
thats all they need, unless you decide to print images in-house.
