Yes, you can, and the gamma will be visually corrected on screen to look the
same, in color managed applications. But you will be losing some viewable
levels on an 8 bit per channel system since you are cramming one end of the
range,
and stretching the other in the transition. This doesn't effect your printed
files, only the finest level of gradiants on screen.

In that case, you set it to D65, and let the software lower the top end of
one or two of your videocard curves to make a D50 whitepoint. Of course this
will lose you even more viewable levels. You would be better off using an
application that allows you to balance the guns to D50, or else using D65,
which most
of us prefer anyways...
