Andrew,

<<Just a side note that I haven't seen mentioned much, but which may be of
interest here: It seems that the latest version of EXIF supports actually
tagging AdobeRGB in-camera JPG files as AdobeRGB instead of no color space.>>

That's basically correct. It used to be that the colorspace specifier was
either sRGB or uncalibrated, so if you were using anything else (like AdobeRGB)
you were screwed. This created a hassle for the serious photog. CIPA (the
organization that controls EXIF) designed EXIF for consumer applications only and
felt RGB is enough. They have been victims of their own success as EXIF found
widespread application beyond consumers. So after nearly two years of customer
complaint, CIPA created a convoluted mechanism for supporting an optional
colorspace (AdobeRGB) using different extensions. DSLR makers are starting to
support that. Kudos to customers who complained loudly and to the DSLR makers for
hearing the customer and pushing it through. But when the next best color
space comes along, this same problem will occur again. What EXIF really needs to
do is simply embed profiles so that any color space can easily be supported.
