I'm trying to calibrate/profile a 17 inch Sony LCD display. This is my
first attempt at seriously calibrating an LCD display. I'm using an
EyeOne Photo package. I also tried a demo copy of BasICColor using the
EyeOne spectro. I get similar but not great results from either.
Where I'm getting lost in this process both with EyeOne Match and with
BasICColor is how to best set the hardware controls on the display
before profiling. EyeOne Match doesn't give any guidance for setting
brightness/contrast before profiling when in LCD mode. With
BasICColor, I can barely hit the brightness aim even with everything
turned up all the way on the Sony LCD (which is a WAY lighter display
condition than you'd ever really want to use). The resulting profiles
from both software packages yield a display with good color but that
seems too light. If I have the same image open on the LCD and a
calibrated CRT, the mid tones on the LCD are far lighter than the same
tones on the CRT. I can make the image on the LCD look like the one on
the CRT if in PHotoshop I open curves and pull the midpoint down by
quite a bit.
Is this just the nature of using an LCD; and something I need to get
used to. Or is there some trick to the calibration process that I'm
missing.
I've gotten the best results (but still with midtones that seem too
light) by using EyeOne Match. Right before the software starts taking
readings (after you select your target color/gamma in advanced mode); I
switch to a test image open in Photoshop. I think(?) at this part of
the process the EyeOne Match has turned off the system profile
correction and I'm seeing raw data on the screen. So I adjust the
hardware controls for backlight/brightness/contrast so that my test
image looks as good as possible. I then switch back to EyeOne Match
and complete the calibration/profiling process.
There has to be a better way that yields better results. What am I
missing?
