Be aware that this recommondatation still comes from the days of CRT,
where the "Brightness" or "Bias" setting controlled the blackpoint -- the
offset of the video signal, while the "Contrast" or "Gain" changed the
amplification of the video signal. You'll find more information in the
color FAQ maintained by Charles Poynton.
In most TFT displays you still have a brightness setting, but this one
does something totally different and controls the luminance of the
backlight and has no significant effect on the black point.
I'd suggest to set both Contrast and Brightness (Backlight!) to maximum
in a TFT, as long the signal is not clipped. On some models a maximum
setting is a good choice on (few) others the maximum without clipping is
at another setting (often "in the middle" like 128 from 256 levels).
Clipping can be seen as a color cast in the highlights. It appears most
in the red channel (first).
Best regards
Peter
