The vast majority of LCD capable calibrators out there are Spyders, so most
of the complaints will be about Spyders too. At this point in time the return
rate for Spyders is a fraction of a percent, so I suspect that the newer,
less tested, devices would actually be more likely to be problematic. The
other
virtue of the Spyder is that ColorVision's replacement policy is unmatched;
some competing products appear to have no return process available at all.

My personal favorite is <www.thecamerastore.com>, but there are many.

Yes, deep in the archives of this list you will find posts by Chris Murphy,
among others, about the odd black generation situation with StylusRIP, since
it
returns to the Epson screening after everything else is done. As I recall you
need to set black generation to none in order to profile this RIP...

Since ColorVision offers a 30 day no questions asked refund policy, I'd
suggest trying one of their profiling solutions before splurging on the RIP,
and if
you find you still want to try the RIP, get a demo while you have the
ColorVision stuff at hand, and see how they work for you.
