Hardware/software for Epson 1280 & 2200

I'm looking for a package that will allow me to create accurate & reliable
profiles for my monitor and printers.

For my graphic design work, I'm using an NEC Multisync FP2141sb (22"
Diamondtron CRT) monitor and an Epson Photo 1280 to create proofs. Because
none of my local print shops use colour management, I rely rather heavily on
reliable proofs off the Epson so that the printers know what I'm trying to
achieve.

For my fine art work, I've got a Compaq P910 (19" Diamondtron CRT) monitor
and an Epson Photo 2200. Obviously, here I want the best possible prints
since I sell them!

So far, I've scraped by using Adobe Gamma utility and the generic profiles,
but they are frequently inadequate and I am often unable to achieve colours
in a print that I've seen the device produce in other cases. And as far as
visual calibration goes - I don't trust my eyes!

Grrrrrr...

So, I'm looking for opinions/first-hand experience on an affordable package
that will provide the necessary measuring tool(s) and software that will
allow me to calibrate & profile the above devices - preferably without
requiring a degree in mathematics or physics ;)

I've seen the Gretag-Macbeth has the Eye-One Photo package... Would this do
the trick? Are there cheaper alternatives that are as good? Help!

Any info greatly appreciated.
