Dane,
The words art and science come to mind of this issue of color matching.
I have a sense of what you are asking, I think. You want a colorimeteric
match to your original if the printer and paper combination is capable.
My opinion is that in a number of situations you get a close visual match,
though it is not exact. In other situations you have to tweak a profile a
lot to get there.
However, there are other subjective issues such as, what does the client
expect to see in his or her prints. I recently did some work at an art
gallery. I was using an Epson 7600 and a rip to prove to the curators that
the newer inkjets would produce the color quality they expected. In the
process of creating and showing prints they signed off on the ones I was not
happy with. They liked the 2nd round of prints that were created. And
considered them as product matches. They were close but were not exact
visual matches. IMO, to get to that point (of an exact visual match) we
needed to have another round or two of tweaking to make the inkjet prints
look exactly like the originals.
The prints were a close visual match right out of the box,(that is using the
Epson printer and the Colorburst X Photo rip), but tweaking was necessary
to get the person, who was paying the bills, to sign off on the prints.
The point is, profiles work quite well but are not perfect and that color
matching is often subjective.
