The rgb driver is only sending three channels to the printer where the black
is being separated. Whether or not the black ink is more or less is relative
to the total amount of ink to hit max density. Epson drivers lay down too
much ink to hit Dmax . How many levels you'll get is largely dependant then
on cutting back ink to have more levels (apparent). When you lay down too
much ink in the dark areas you certainly will have overprinting and lack of
dark detail. Most rip manufacturers that have linearisations have all seen
banding increased when linearised to show more total levels. The banding has
been associated to feed lengths and variations in paper thickness and other
problems that I've been told. So with the Epson rgb drivers you'll have
filled in the bands that an ink limited rip will uncover. Why exactly the
Epsons band is an ongoing discussion/discovery.
