Rudy,
Gariba,
Profiles do not know the difference between image black and rebate
black, but the scanner(operator) does. And it is important to
understand that the same profile will always convert the same rgb
numbers to the same 4/c each and every time(all things set the same in
photoshop of course). In order to get the 0,0,0(or near this) black in
the image, you must crop out the border during the scanner setup or
manually enter black in the image. But many times there is no deep
black in an image and you may have to use the rebate black as the
b-point in your scan, then adjust the image in photoshop(closing the
crop area of the image before converting will not change the results of
the process). In many cases it is a mistake to make the darkest area of
a photo a full 0,0,0 black because you will alter the cast of the black
area(neutralize it to grey UCR), thus shifting the color of the entire
image.
By the way there is nothing wrong with any method of obtaining black,
it's just easier if there is something in the image that is a deep
black, like a wheel well in an automobile. In the end you want an image
that matches the art(fm switch) and also has a total ink value that
matches that of your press or reproduction method.

Hello Gariba,
Another thing to check is the black rebate area around your scanned
image.
Profiles do not know the difference between image black and rebate black.
It might be necessary to close crop your images before converting.
Hope this helps you or someone else.
