I have ran into this same issue before with ColorBlind Professional Mac 4.2.
I solved it by re-linearizing and then testing the linearization curve by
making sure my CMY was balanced in LCH - L value (low as possible), C value
(4 and under), and H (340 -15 degrees). This indicates a well balanced CMY.
After I was happy with the linearization, I sent a 1400 patch CMYK target
and built a 16bit profile. The results yielded much smoother transitions in
all gradients.
IMO the secret is in the linearization, and profile bit depth.
