Marc, I read your comments with some interest. I have been using CompassProfile to create 8-bit cmyk profiles for our Polaproof and HP500 Inkjet. Recently, a colleague imported one of my Polaproof profiles into Monaco profilemaker, and re-exported it for me as a 16-bit from Monaco. (This was a workaround to get the profile accepted by our iGen's RIP... for whatever reason, it will not accept my CompassProfile-created .icm files. I don't know if it's 8-bit vs 16, or what... but it will read them after they're exported from Monaco. But I digress!)

Viewing the gamut of each in ColorSync Utility, the 8-bit looks alarmingly jagged, especially in the shadow area. The 16-bit re-export looks nice and smooth in contrast. When I load the 16-bit profile into WasatchRip as my source, I get slightly improved density in the shadow areas- but it's a modest change. Still, this intrigues me- are there strong advantages for a 16 bit profile?

Also, regarding your comments on linearization before profiling: I have experimented with calibrating the HP5000 to make fairly linear 0-100% gradients on the individual inks before profiling, I have also tried calibrating it to create neutral grays before profiling, which required a pretty major change in the base calibration. I wasn't able to choose a clear winner, can you give me some insight into your experience with this tactic? Sorry if this has been hashed out before. I look forward to reading your comments-- or if you have a link to point me to, that would be greatly appreciated!

IMO the secret is in the linearization, and profile bit depth.
