I just ran a little experiment with my D100 today. It was about 5:00 DST
(East Coast) in the afternoon. The sky was semi overcast. My Minolta
ChromaMeter CL-100 said the chromaticities of that light coming from the sky
was x=0.325 and y=0.330, which, when converted to blackbody equivalents,
translates to 5859 degrees Kelvin. My WB was set at Cloudy. According to the
D100 User manual, on pages 50 and 53, Cloudy is 'equal' to 6000K. So, by
having my WB to Cloudy, I wasn't too far from the truth (there is no such
thing as absolute truth in life but we have to start somewhere). I used RAW
to shoot under this lighting. My question is: does anyone knows how Adobe
CameraRAW calculates the temperature it displays when opening the NEF? In my
case, CameraRAM reports '5500' degree Kelvin when opening the NEF photos I
took under the above lighting conditions. I wonder where does CR gets its
color temperature information? Does it figure it out algorithmically?
Sure enough, if I input my measured chromaticity (5859K) in the
'Temperature' field, the overall color cast in my photo does not go away
magically. It makes me wonder to what extent this color temperature
numerical control is useful?
Thank's for your comments,
