There is an article (somewhat buried) that explains all this:

In a nutshell you would pick a contrast ratio based on the type of output
you would be working with. 500:1 for Fine Art ink jet verses say 350:1 for a
contract proof and so on. VERY cool and useful feature that works very well.
This is all conducted with the calibration of the black, not having anything
to do with the profile itself.
