Roger,
The first number looks way too low which you noted too. Any chance that you
picked up a specular reflection on that measurement?
A year or two ago, I did some reflectance measurements vs. wavelength with a
spectrometer with an integrating sphere of about 20 different paints (I was
looking to find the most reflective white). Different photopapers are about
90-94% reflective and the blackest I achieved was 4.4%. That was black sand
paper sprayed with black paint. A more realistic black might be 10% but I
did not test that. So for example, 90% to 10% would give a 9:1 contrast
ratio.
Not knowing better, should not the monitor be calibrated/profiled for
optimum performance and then let it alone? If a printer's limited range is
to be evaluated, should that not be done through the "Pre-view" function in
PhotoShop?
By the way, the paint winner was Behr 1050.
