I don't know if there's a consensus, but it's best to have the room light
as dim as possible. At least attach the shield (hope that's the right
word here) to the display and take care that no direct light strikes the
display. The reason is simple. A measurement in the "dark" (in a dimmed
room) will be more accurate then a measurement where additional light on
the display will affect the readings of the colorimeter. Especially in
the shadows this will make a difference.
_If_ you're asking how the room lighting should be set when you calibrate
your monitor with a visual method like Adobe Gamma that's a totally
different question. Then the answer is not as clear and lies somewhere
between "lighting should be as close as possible to the lighting which
was used to create the visual calibration method" and "the same as when
you're using the display in your daily work".
