Hello,
A couple of questions about monitor and working space gamma:
I understand that every monitor has a native gamma and that the gamma
characteristics it displays can be modified by calibration. What I
don't understand is why 1.8 is considered the common or appropriate
gamma for Mac system monitors while 2.2 is considered "normal" or
"best" for PC systems. (Mine is a Mac.) What are the considerations
when selecting a gamma for a monitor profile?
The Photoshop Color Settings allow choices of working color spaces
with 1.8 gamma (Colormatch RGB and GreyGamma 1.8) or 2.2 gamma (Adobe
RGB and GreyGamma 2.2). On what basis (unless one wants to match the
working space of a service bureau) does one decide which gamma to use
for a working space? Is there or should there be any correlation
between monitor gamma and RGB working space gamma?
I ask primarily in the context of printing files from Photoshop to
standard or Postscript enabled Epson printers.
Thanks in advance.
