As Graeme has already pointed out, the best reason for using a black
backing is to compare the measurements to other measurements made on
a black backing.
Using a black backing on translucent papers can be quite disastrous
since it can severely distort not only the paper white but also the
tonal behavior in the shadows.
I find that the best practical solution in this case is to place a
few blank sheets of the same stock under the target while
measuring-it's one of the reasons I still find uses for the
Spectroscan despite having various strip readers.
