For production scanning with support for older scanners I recommend
Silverfast . Silverfast is as capable as Linocolor of working hand in hand
with ICC color management and includes many user interface features that are
more suited to photographers.
For casual scanning the Vuescan offers an enormous bang for dollar. Ed has
insatiable desire to improve the application constantly. He has succeeded in
outdoing all the scanner vendors for DTP scanners in bringing pro quality
function to the not always so pro hardware. I recommend Vuescan to anyone
needing to do sporadic scanning of decent quality.
Both are good. They have to be considered for what they'll be used for ,
both are excellent.
