Late binding doesn't address the repurposing of images to mutiple devices. Prebinding does. PDF/X- and 3 is a move in a direction, but I don't think it's the best choice becasue it takes an existing CMYK file and just assigns a color space before it's process through some system.

Device link profiles are the tweener to shift a file from a standard separtation and are not meant to replace the standard. At least, that's what my thesis is telling me.

I think it is fair to say that the only separation standard we see on this side of the pond is whatever Photoshop defaults to. Good as the profiles are, the CMYK produced is still inappropriate to upwards of 50% of the organizations it's handed to.
Where's your data to support this 50% because I don't see it that evenly. I see more default separations to Adobe supplied color spaces than anything else, ( well, besides untagged,) and from a standardization standpoint, that's a good thing. (not the untagged part) WHY? This means that the industry can adopt a prebinding workflow with greater ease because it's widely more accepted. Tween the file the rest of the way via dlinks of 4d color space twisting.

All binding models need to change to a standard that doesn't impose a force feed to the existing workflow. We just have to show the users a better way of process control.
And yes, color mgmt is a process control period. And yes, you heard it from a printer.
(gasp)
