Our experience is that it takes "forever" to create a profile from a
Roland FJ 400 - so far we are going on 2 years.
Before you can measure a target - you need to be able to print one,
which you can't do with Roland's proprietary rip software. There is no
provision for limiting ink when turning off color management.
We are now getting good results profiling, using ImagePrint as the rip
with the regular inkset.
Roland has indicated no interest in facilitating custom profiles,
especially when it comes to media they do not sell.
Most of their media is not archival nor high quality for fine art
prints. Although at one time interested in the fine arts and
photography market, Roland DGA now service mainly the signage people,
leaving fine art printers to fend for ourselves...
To add to our troubles with the printer, Roland has not taken full
responsibility for a botched service by their "authorized" repair
person, from Professonal Graphics NY, that has left the printer with
many serious problems and kept it offline for months. We have lost all
confidence in Roland DGA and their customer service, and do not
recommend buying an expensive printer from them.
The Hi Fi Jet Pro is a very well made printer and at the time we
bought, it produced the best prints, provided we stayed with Roland's
papers. But now from what I see and hear Epson's Ultrachrome has
surpassed it. Rolands Pigment Black on matte papers can only be
described as feeble and weak .The Orange, Green inks have failed to
live up to expectations. Roland put out an enhanced black for
non-glossy media, but we have not been able to produce workable
profiles utilizing it. It keeps darker tonalities artificially light
with a sharp, sudden drop-off to black.
If you have a better experience - we sure would like to hear about it.

PS:
Epson's new little 8x10 printer seems to me is ushering in a new era,
where diluted inks will no longer be necessary, since a much smaller
volume of ink can be dispursed on the media. LC and LM can be replaced
with R, B, which to me shows a promise of greater gamuts to come.

Was wondering if anyone could give me an estimate on how much time it
would take to create a "Quality" Printer Profile from the following:
Printer:
Roland FJ-500 8- color (CMYKLcLmOG) running any media - arbitrary
choice on your part....
Profiling Equipment:
GretagMacbeth ProfileMaker & Spectrolino with xy table.
Trying to settle a bet..... ;-)
