Hi
I wondered this same question. I've been using an Epson 1290 (Epson Ink) and
an 1160 (Lyson SG) for prints for several years.
Good profiles led to consistently good results...
Then good fortune enabled me to upgrade to a 9600 (ultrachrome) The Atkinson
profiles are excellent and even give good B/W on the right papers. I tried
Roy Harrington's excellent QuadtoneRIP for B/W and thought I'd almost got it
sorted. Enough people however kept saying that ImagePrint would make the
difference... I tried it with a very skeptical eye (given the initial price
amongst other things!)
The differences are very noticeable, not just to me but also the usual
random visitors I rope in to do comparison tests (many accept that a free
coffee may well mean a quick comparison test is on its way :-) To put it at
it's simplest (and perhaps most relevant) the colours are better and shadows
have more detail. The prints look much more as I want them. The black and
white performance is great. I particularly like the availability of profiles
for different lighting conditions, since some of my prints have needed
tweaking in the past to allow for their viewing locations.
There is also the improvement in printing speed, and the ability to define
document layout as you see fit. An example ... I took hundreds of pictures
on a recent visit to Scotland to see some friends. I used PS CS to make 10x8
contact sheet files. Using IP I dropped these onto a 30"x44" canvas in IP
and arranged them to fit. A quick print at 360 dpi gives the biggest contact
sheet I've ever made. I was going to chop it up but the novelty value has
left it in one piece so far.
Needless to say I got a copy (the current state of the dollar/pound rate
also helped me save a lot by buying direct) Also, if you work out the costs
of profiling several papers the hit is somewhat less daunting. The many
paper profiles available also make it easier to experiment.
Please feel free to contact me off list if you have any more detailed
questions?
bye for now
Keith Cooper
