Well, if you are proofing a wide gamut colorant set, that offers deep blacks,
on media that your eye sees as a good white, then output emulation may well
make your image look less like the final than it does right from your Photoshop
workingspace. On the other hand if you are printing on a natural beige
uncoated fine art paper whch produces weak blacks, using an inkset that has a best
red thats a rusty orange, then using softproof with paper white and ink black
will indicate all three of these things: paper tone, black limit, and gamut
limitations.
However, softproofing a weak black by measuring how much above absolute black
the paper black is, and moving that much above monitor black will always end
up with a black that has been lightened too much, since the monitor black was
not perfectly black to begin with. Similarly, I find that paper white tints
can be exaggerated by the spectro's reading of paper whiteners. So I typically
adjust the preview portion of my profiles accordingly, at the time of build,
using the preview white and black adjustments capabilities in ProfilerPRO, but
these options are not available in other applications.
