About screen ruling - maximum screen ruling is about 133-150lpi (on
different printers it's different but even on Epson 7600 I cannot get good
result on screen ruling more than 150lpi, dots are looking washed out). So
in my opinion ScreenProof is usable for proofing Flexo, silk
(screen)-printing presses, newspaper presses and offset presses with screen
ruling no more 150lpi, but not high quality high screen ruling commercial
offset presses. Also it's not possible to proof screen of gravuire presses
due to special raster.
Of course this depends on what your aim is. If you really want to examine
the dots critically, then no inkjet based product will really satisfy you.
Only something that can physically render at the imagesetter resolution
will give you such accuracy (and the color mightn't quite match on such
a product, since you can't change the dots to make the press and proof
appear the same).
If on the other hand, you just want a proofing product that taps into your
workflow at the desired point (ie., post imagesetter RIP), then you
need an imagesetter file (screened proof) capable product, and it is largely
irrelevant as to whether you can see the dots clearly. The aim is to reproduce
the color and shape of what the press will look like as accurately as possible,
using an inkjet or other digital printer. Products that offer this workflow
that I'm aware of, are Black Magic, BestColor/EFI ScreenProof, and (of course) Cyclone.
