Any guidance welcome and appreciated. also any opinions as to whether the

The scanner itself is fine. I seldom scan negs, so I don't have a lot to
offer there - I'm sure someone else will.
You should upgrade your scanner software to Nikon Scan 4.0.1, via <
support.nikontech.com >. Set the Product to Scanners and the sub-category to LS8000.
You'll get a list of appropriate software. If you're using Mac OS X, you
should also upgrade the scanner firmware (Firmware Updater 1.11) before
upgrading to Nikon Scan 4. (You can also upgrade the firmware from Windows, but it's
not as important.)
Are the Hutchinson instruction for scanning negs? I don't think that you can
profile the scanner in the same way for negs that you do for transparencies,
and if you attempt to, the settings (e.g., gamma) are unlikely to be the same.
The scanner can be profiled easily for transparencies using a Hutch target and
appropriate software, and the results are very good.
