I hope this isn't too far off topic. I am using a Nikon Super Coolscan 8000
ED scanner to scan primarily color negative film. I am trying to determine
the best baseline settings to use to achieve a more linear tone response
curve. It seems to me that with all of the adjustments turned off the
scanner gives a somewhat overexposed result, coming close to clipping the
highlights.
I've read (Hutchinson) that a good gamma setting should be 2.6 but when I
use this in the scanner's curves settings it appears to give too extreme of
a result, crushing the highlights. The scanner software also has an LCH
editor--I am not familiar with it and wonder if and how it should be used.
Any guidance welcome and appreciated. also any opinions as to whether the
scanner's own software (Nikon Scan 3.1) has enough flexibility to get
consistently good scans or whether a third-party tool would be better.
William
