Hi,
I have a few questions regarding calibrating and profiling. Have a seat because I'm going to get long winded!
I have some very good tools but little investment was ever made in training. What little training there was was done before this responsibility fell to me. So now I am trying to learn by the seat of my pants and need help. I have a G4 with a 17"
LCD. I am using this workstation to do Photoshop work and also to drive an Epson 9600, primarily as a proofing device.
The tools I am working with are a Gretag MacBeth Spectroscan/Spectrolino, Photoshop 7, Profilemaker 4.1.5 and Imageprint to RIP files for printing. I want to be able to rely on the display to give me an accurate representation of my images so that I
can use the display to soft-proof. I also want to be able to embed profiles so that the Epson can produce reasonably predictable proofs for specific press conditions whenever I can get a profile from a print vendor or by using the generic SWOP
profiles when I can't.
To begin I want to use ProfileMaker's Measure Tool to calibrate the display. This is where I get off to a rocky start! In the "Configure" box should I check the "spectral" box? What is this option doing? Then I go to "Calibrating Monitor" and am
faced with several options, some I am comfortable with, others not. I am selecting 6500K for my white point, 1.8 Gamma, 100% brightness and LCD for Display Type. I do not click "Set Paper White".
There is a reference file in Profilemaker / Reference Files / Monitor which I believe was made here when the system was configured (May of '03). It's the only reference file in the folder and displays in the MT dialog box as the default. I don't
know how it was generated or where it came from. When I select it as my reference I get this message "The luminance values of your reference monitor(107.2 Cd/m2) can not be reached by this monitor". Can you take a stab as to why and whether I should
be using a reference at all?
I unclick "Use Reference" and proceed to the calibration. Spectrolino is referenced out and attached to the display. The only user-controls I have for the display are resolution and brightness. The first operation in calibrating is Contrast. Since I
don't have contrast control I just click start and the "Quality Indicator and reference arrows do not quite line-up so I proceed to the next step, White Point adjustment. I skip on to the next since I have no ability to adjust white point variables.
I skip the next dialog as well, Optimum Lightness, and move on the Luminance. As this involves setting Brightness levels I can actually interact with the process by setting the brightness to it's lowest level!
I proceed. About 40% of the way up the Brightness slider the triangles align. In the following dialog I have the option of checking Desired Luminance and entering a luminance value. Should I? I didn't. The Current Luminance is 103 and the Expected
Luminance is 89, presumably based on the Brightness setting.
The calibration begins and completes successfully. Not being entirely comfortable with the results I nevertheless proceed to Profilemaker to create my display profile. I open PM, set it to Monitor and the reference is LCD Monitor Reference 2.0txt
and create the Measurement file and build my profile.
That's it in a nutshell. I'm just not certain I have this part of the Color Management chain nailed down so it throws uncertainty on anything else I do. I hope someone can shed light. Maybe it'll help someone else as well. Please reply directly to
my email address as well as the group, if this is convenient.
Thanks!
