re: color-sync post
I have the 7960 and it is a beauty, HP has come out with a huge new
printer line up however.
The HP7960 better defines darker areas than my Epson 1280 (Example:
Dockers trousers, yuck!). Graduated detail vs. murky mud. This is with
factory drivers, not a RIP (my next purchase).
HP inks are expensive, the paper also. However, just read, but haven't
confirmed, that Ilford is selling the same Swiss manufactured paper as
HP, but cheaper.
The physical durability of HP 7960 inks is VERY poor, they are
water-soluable. You can dip an Epson 1280 glossy print in water, no
damage. Put a wet thumb on an HP7960 and that ink is gone elsewhere.
Wilhelm Institute should perhaps build a Slurpee room test. In my
experience one drop of sweat equals screen mode in the affected area.
HP7960 #59 cartridge is supposedly the only neutral BW option in any
inkjet printer; use the #56 black with color however.
The 7960 is slow, slow and slow. The HP driver is excellent in my
experience out of the box. The quality is worth the cost and the
required lacquering/lamination, if you are a professional photographer.
For small batches of prints that is, unless you're getting top dollar.
Of course, HP or Epson instead of Kodak or Fuji on the back of
professional photographs raises interesting marketing questions, but
that's for another discussion.
