The Ilford paper seems to be of the similar stock but the HP OEM'd is custom tailored to have better image quality in many aspects. The backing of the paper is also defined to reduce picking errors to almost 0. The most glaring (no pun intended) with the similar Ilford paper is bronzing.
Ilford Classic papers are however widely distributed, much cheaper option if you accept the slight anomalies.
The HP inks are expensive on the little consumer models yet on the DJ printers they are the cheapest in their class per ink coverage, for OEM inks that is. My consumer model costs a lot per copy yet I find it practical to use for office printing. It would be a good idea for HP to make a medium duty DJ with multiple black inks, and a matte paper with an extended archival life, for dye ink.
