I'm trying to simulate how real data will behave, by using synthetic data that I can visualize and follow. You can tag the synthetic data with any profile, then run it through various conversions to see what happens to it. I would *expect* that converting to the same profile as the source would have minimal effect - e.g., it's essentially a null transform, save for rounding errors through the CMM. That's close to what I get with ProPhoto, but NOT what I get with AdobeRGB.
I originally started this exercise when examining the Nikon Adobe RGB 4.0.0.3000 profile that their software embeds into images. It is NOT identical to AdobeRGB (1998), so I wanted to see what would happen if someone made the conversion to AdobeRGB (1998). I thought I'd start with the the null scenario using AdobeRGB and I got a surprise.

I guess the next step is to actually do the conversion, then subtract the two files to see if the difference is real.
