Rich,

I don't know if anyone else has put forth this answer to your question or not. I suspect that you are seeing the vector shift due to a difference in white point between Adobe 1998 (6600K) and Lab (5000K). I suspect Color Think is taking the data round-trip as opposed to recognizing it as a null transform. The reason you don't see this shift in Pro Photo is that it shares the same white point as the PCS space.

That's my best guess. I suspect Steve will have an authoritative answer.
