I just did some v4 profiles for an Epson 2200 printing onto Somerset Velvet, using matte Black ink. I set up printouts for the TC9.18 testcharts printing out of Photoshop CS using Same As Source as the print setting, with media set to Velvet, 1440 dpi output, fast printing Off, and No Color Adjustment.
The profile looks pretty good, but I find that I can get a more pleasing image by doing so saturation boosting on the image while soft-proofing through the profile (mostly RelCol).
I'm often finding that a stack of layers like this helps, when they are opacity-tweaked while soft-proofing:
5) An image-specific curve in Luminosity mode, intended to make sure that some deep blacks exist, while steepening the contrast of the 3/4 tones.
4) Background copy in Hue mode, possibly backed off in opacity (to have control over the potential hue shifts of the soft light curve as it approaches the gamut limits) -- possibly turned off completely.
3) Background copy in Luminosity mode, possibly backed off in opacity (to have control over contrast increase of the soft light curve, as often I need more saturation boost than contrast boost).
2) A flat curve in Soft Light mode. (I've often found that I like the effect of #2 + #3 [and sometimes #4] better than a Hue/Sat move.)
1) Background
I'm wondering what I can do that will give me a better unadjusted print. If I use GMB Profile Editor's Global Correction > Saturation slider, am I likely to clip high-gamut colors or accentuate gray-balance problems in the process of boosting the overall level of saturation? Any pointers/suggestions would be appreciated.
Also, what kind of price point is Kodak's new editor going to fall into?
Thanks.
Rick Gordon
