Server-based color management is a practical solution to your concerns.
For example, using HELIOS ImageServer and PDF HandShake, you can print from
your page layout application, using the "Omit Images" option, to a print
queue on the server. A PDF is created, and high-res original images on the
server replace the omitted images in the PDF. ICC color matching (using the
included Heidelberg CMM) is then applied to all elements (vector and raster
images, fonts, etc.) in the PDF - using per-object ICC source profiles. The
PDF HandShake "Smart CMM" can detect and fix problems such as RGB
grayscales, and can detect and preserve black, white, and gray.
The job is now fully color-matched and ready for the RIP. If the job is
going to various sites, or for archiving purposes, you could output the PDF
in CIE Lab, or in an agreed upon standard. Or, you could automatically
generate multiple PDF's, each color matched using an appropriate ICC
destination profile.
