A new
install of OptiCal can make a create a new profile but it uses this bad
profile as a base, for example the gamma that is displayed is so bad
that within the Optical or even the default MacOS Colorsync calibrator
there is no way to use the brighten functions of the monitor to bring
it to the recommended spec. So this new profile is just trying to fix a
bad profile.

It doesn't work that way. All existing videocard data is removed when OptiCAL runs, and a new profile unrelated to the old one is built. So if you get a similar problem again it either means you failed to create a newer profile so the older on is still being used, or you are using bad settings to build the new profile again. Choose the canned profile for your monitor in the Displays System Prefs, and the previous profile will be deselected and your screen out from under your bad calibration. Usually a bad calibration occurs when the Spyder is removed from the screen prematurely, or the energy saver comes on in the middle of calibration.
