I use a PC and my wife uses a Mac (G5) and I see no difference when using
Photoshop or with other Adobe Apps. If you build a PC with quality parts
and build your documents properly then the results are identical. The issue
is more a matter of which platform you're used to - they both have their
merits. Since over 90% users use PC it's no wonder that far more PC users
send poorly prepared jobs to printers. But that's not an indication that
the platform is lacking, only that PC users include more dummies who don't
know what they're doing.
BUT there is one huge issue -> Type 1 postscript fonts!
If you work with Type1 fonts with non-Adobe apps (ie Quark, MSWord, etc..)
then the Mac still has a definite advantage. On a PC there are serious
limitations with displaying multiple Type 1 font style variations and
stroke weights and users must resort to using charts and key commands to
find and use them. Many font faces will not display in pull down menus and
different apps will display different fonts. It's a mess! There are many
references on the Web regarding this issue, here's one :
http://www.eyewire.com/help/type.html#ital
Adobe apps appear to be immune to this problem because they identify and
list fonts in a way that avoids the issue.
Bottom line is that for I see little reason to switch to a Mac if you're a
photographer, and the opposite is true as well. But graphic
artists/designers using Type 1 fonts still have a good reason to stick with
a Mac. When Opentype becomes more common then this issue will disappear.
But for now it remains an important difference.
