I realized that the demo would not let you export lab from color

no problem I have a licensed copy. I did export the Pantone Coated lab
values as a text doc but when I imported them into BestColor editor
but they
came in without the pantone names. What I got was 1 through 1137 with
corresponding lab values. What I need is Example: Pantone 155 C then
the
lab value. I9m using a Mac for color picker and a PC for Best color
editor.
Here's how i did it:
In BestColor, open the spot color editor and create a new/empty file
but enter a few bogus color entries into the file. Save this file as
"MyColors.tab" or whatever. Open this in a text editor and you'll see
the header info and layout of the color list.
Import the spot color text file from Color Picker into Excel, making
sure that the color name and Lab values each get a column/field of
their own in the worksheet. Start mucking with the data until you get
it in the same basic layout as what Best is looking for. After this, it
should be as simple as copy/pasting the massaged data from Excel into
the Best TAB file. Worst case, you need to export the data from Excel
as either space or tab delimited (it's been a while since I've done
this) and then get it into your text file that way. Make sure to leave
the ";Lab" header and other stuff in place.
This will probably give you a version of the Pantone color library in
all caps. If you want to create a "Alias" list in upper/lower case
without retyping it all, this is where Excel can be handy but it's
tricky. Add another sheet to your Excel file and use a formula to
convert the entries from all caps to upper/lower case. The formula I
used went something like:
=CONCATENATE((PROPER(LEFT((<cell ref>,LEN(<cell ref>)-4))),RIGHT(<cell
ref>,4))
I think the LEFT/RIGHT references were to avoid turning "CVC" into
"Cvc" or whatever.
I'll tell you what, if you know a thing or two about regression
analysis or "iterative" curve fitting, I could trade you my file for
some knowledge of stats. I'm in need of something that will find values
from a target curve to an actual curve for finding dot gain values for
some projects I'm working on. I know how to do this manually by
following a chart, but I need something that will do this for me. Back
in my scanning days, we used to draw out "Jones diagrams" on graph
paper for this sort of thing. It's easy to explain what I need but I'm
mildly math challenged (missed that day in school I guess!). On a
similar note, I'm looking for a formula/Excel sheet where I can plug in
desired dot gain/TVI at a few data points and have it come back with a
smooth curve and values for any number of data points. Sounds simple
but it appears hard to do. I basically need a "Photoshop curve tool"
but that will give me any number of data point values out to at least
two decimals.
Cheers,
