I would STRONGLY suggest that you invest in custom printer profiles rather
than try using a scanner-based printer profiling package, especially if you
are trying to profile an Epson inkjet printer.
I've wasted loads of money on ink & paper, and loads of time fruitlessly
trying to edit poor profiles into good ones, so I know about this.
After obtaining custom printer profiles for my Epson 1200 from ChroMix I
could get on with making prints and stop wasting time making poor profiles.
It was a real liberation. You might think that the usual rate for custom
profiles (about USD100) is high, but in my experience it's CHEAP compared to
the cost of struggling along with tools that promise much but deliver
little. Maybe as a photographer I'm fussy about colour, so YMMV.
With the modern pigment-based Epsons such as the 2100/2200 the problems are
even worse due to viewing light issues. In this case I've obtained custom
printer profiles for each of the viewing conditions that may be used (D50,
D65 and F11) since the consultant who made these profiles uses Gretag
Macbeth ProfileMaker Pro, which can optimise the printer profile for various
viewing spectra.
For monitor and scanner profiles, either Monaco or ColorVision should work
well (I use ColorVision Spyder for monitor profiles & Monaco EZColor for
scanner profiles with excellent results). It's printer profiles that can
waste a lot of your time & money.
