Have heard everything from de-install Gimp, install borderless Gimp
for the Epson 1280; get update Panther 10.3.2; also take out the
1280 driver and put in a 1270 driver; lie to your software (that's
original enough); get more drivers from Epson, etc.
I'm sorry to hear this. My own take on this, from what I know (I'm
not an OS X expert, but I'm the Gimp-Print project lead, so I'm seeing
it from a particular perspective):
1) Do *not* install 10.3.2. There is a USB issue that causes a
variety of problems (very slow printing, printing doesn't complete, or
print jobs never clear off the queue until you reboot). This affects
more than just Gimp-Print; it should affect any driver that goes
through CUPS or uses the CUPS USB back end supplied with 10.3.2. This
is being worked on, but it's not a Gimp-Print issue. This issue most
likely affects Stylus RIP under 10.3.2 unless Stylus RIP includes its
own USB driver. Note that I don't know whether this is an issue under
10.3.0 or 10.3.1; it's just that there are lots of reports of this
under 10.3.2.
2) The Gimp-Print version bundled with Panther (4.2.5) is just fine
for either the 1270 or 1280. The newest stable version (4.2.6) is not
a critical update, and there's no need to install it unless you need a
particular feature or bug fix from it.
3) The 1270 driver will work fine with the 1280, but the 1280 driver
will too. There are very few differences between the two; there's a
small difference in the zero-margin positioning, and the 1280 driver
supports 2880x720. Note that the 1280 driver will not work with the
1270 printer; the compatibility is one way.
4) Gimp-Print 4.2 doesn't do full bleed. It does zero-margin
printing, but zero margin positioning is slightly different on each
printer sample, so you'll likely get a narrow margin on one edge or
the other. This is fixed in 5.0 alpha, but won't be back ported.
5) If you use the Epson monitoring software (to monitor ink levels),
TURN IT OFF. This will likely interfere with the USB back end and may
cause other confusion. Sorry.
"Your printer is controlled by Panther, not by your printer
software." says one support guru. I believe him.
That's a matter of interpretation, but what it really means is that
CUPS is what actually talks to your printer. Gimp-Print -- or any
other CUPS driver -- simply creates a stream of printer-specific data,
which one of the CUPS components -- usually the much-maligned USB back
end -- then sends to the printer. Again, unless Stylus RIP or any of
the other RIPs use their own back end, they're just as susceptible to
all of this. Printing software that's "compatible with Panther"
probably goes through CUPS, and that's where the USB problems start.
I've copied Tyler Blessing, who may be able to explain further.
I de-installed mYPATIENCE and have installed iQUIT. My day's already
brighter, that swelling in my back pocket is lessening, and I hope to
get mYSELF back 2Work before management comes back from
hERSHOPPING.
I will look into ImagePrint RIP. This is a very cerebral group of
people here, I value your advice.
