Thank you all for your feedback,
The biggest concern with re-assigning is in separation. Re-assigning input
profiles to RGB images is not much of a problem. However, if we separate an
RGB image to CMYK using one profile, then assign another, we are losing the
separation information.
Do we really need to assign a CMYK profile to see what it would look like on
multiple outputs? Shouldn't software allow us to proof without assigning? I
know we currently send single CMYK images to multiple outputs at the moment,
but is this something we want to continue? Is this what we are aiming for?
Separating to custom profiles built for a specific output almost always
produces better results, and makes it easier for printers to produce output
consistent with supplied proofs.
Also, why would we use a "re-assign" feature to apply a newer, more accurate
capture device profile? There are two parts to the equation - calibration
and profiling. A different scanner calibration would produce different data.
How often would you really produce a new profile without re-calibrating
first? Would you not convert to the new profile instead of assigning?
We have situations where publishers have insisted that images be separated
using their profile. This allows them to better match proofs. They also
believe they get more optimal ink usage by using correct GCR settings.
However, there is no 100% way to tell that an image has been separated to
their profile. We can only go on what has been assigned to the image. In
almost all cases, the profile assigned will be the profile that the image
was separated to, but it is possible that the user could have separated to a
different profile and then assigned the publishers profile. Isn't this akin
to pretending you have separated to the right profile? This is a common
situation.
Please don't get me wrong, we are strong believers in ICC workflows. We have
have been working for many years producing software targeted at delivering
accurate advertising material to publishers. We are always looking at ways
to make workflows tighter and less error prone. We have done a lot of work
to make ICC workflows easier through two of our new products (which I will
refrain from advertising on this list). However there are still many areas
that are prone to error. One of the areas we are looking at now is
re-assigning profiles, and the difficulty that users have understanding the
difference between "assigning" and "converting". Thinking outside current
technology limitations, how can we make this easier for all types of users?
I appreciate your comments
Happy New Year
