Epson is using the same program / method to create these canned profiles
as the Atkinson profiles. Epson purchased either the technology or made
some sort of an agreement. This is far better than what Epson has
bundled in the past, but the Atkinson profiles are not the cure all.
They cannot correct some of the nastier characteristics of the newer
printers. With the 7600/9600 the B+W was no better than any other custom
profile, and for color work the shadows are too blocked, the blues are
too cyan in a D50 booth, and the profiles do not yield the smoothest
transitions in certain areas. If I were buying this printer I'd
probably give the Epson profiles a shot anyway, but be prepared to make
custom ones, especially if you are printing work and need profiles for
specific lighting conditions other than D50 (which you likely will).
ImagePrint 6.0 is going to have 4000 support, and along with the color
printing enhancements, the new B+W modes are stellar. Sepia, selenium,
split toning, whatever you can dream up. For example you can do a
slightly cool black and deep shadows, and lift it too warmer in the
highlights with complete control over where the transition takes place,
as well as how gentle or hard the transition is between the two toned
"areas" of the print. No metamerism either. If you are a B+W shooter,
this is the piece that will get your darkroom equipment in the
classifieds once and for all.
