I sent an email to Thomas Knoll a while back in relation to a similar issue (integer errors in Lab) over Camera Raw, after reading Bruce's information on the subject. He replied back that if I was using 16-bit files, I shouldn't worry about it. Maybe this means that calculations in the PCS are in 16-bits?
Indeed, all modern CMMs use 16 bits for the PCS. Coupled with 16-bit profiles it maintains a high-bit workflow.
"Stopping" the conversion in Lab in Photoshop is what brings it down to 8-bit

Steve
