Doug,
Roger is on the right track in terms of suggesting that you first get
to know the client's workflow and see how they have been getting
acceptable results. After you are sure you clearly understand how they
are getting it done now, and have their trust you can make suggestions
for improving it, and will have a better chance of getting the client
to actually adopt your ideas.
A case in point: I work with ad agencies as a digital artist, and as a
color consultant. At first when I spoke about color management and good
cm policies to the folks at the agencies I got a lot of glazed looks
and very few takers. Then I decided to work by example. When I began to
work with new clients I first worked to get to know their current
system. Then I would use my tools to create profiles for their in house
printers that I would use when printing. After a short while they began
to notice that I got better results faster than they could. Then they
began to ask about what I was doing that led to these improved results.
Then they started to call me their "color guy" and any time they had a
color critical project they made sure I was there to help.
The short term advice would be if you know your client is going to
incorrectly assign sRGB to your images try converting them to sRGB and
delivering those files. By converting instead of assigning you'll
maintain the most integrity you can and the end results will be much
better.
If you're in San Francisco look up Mark Rutherford. He's a shooter and
APA member who has lots of digital experience and has a very good grasp
on the very issues you're facing. Tell him I sent ya.
