honestly I don't see why we even need an explicit option these days.
It should just be on, assuming sRGB as source for untagged images.
As OmniWeb is a pro-level browser I think it's a little more
understandable as an option - it's a performance tradeoff (though
whether it should be on or off by default is debatable, and I'd need
further info - mostly benchmarks - to make more of an opinion on that).
According to Omni, it's off by default primarily for performance
reasons. I didn't get too much into what Off actually means, but I
assumed it meant a null transform for all images, or just letting
Quartz handle it according to system defaults (which should mean at
least images with embedded profiles are handled properly, right?).
I don't see it as a step-backwards - at least it has an option to
behave according to the desired model, either globally or per-site.
It's at least a positive step to see that when CS is on it's going to
assume sRGB as source for images without embedded profiles. It sounded
no worse (when ColorSync is "off") than what we have now, and much
better when it's on.
Anyway, they are very interested in feedback - there will be a public
beta beginning in February, and they are determined to get it right and
so are looking for input on every aspect of the browser. ColorSync was
an area I felt them out in particularly, and as they felt they had
taken the right approach to how they implemented it (when it's on) they
could probably use input from the experts on the appropriate defaults.
I look forward to seeing the performance impact, and if it's not too
great then it may be a reasonable thing to ask for matching to be on by
default. Clarification on how it acts when CS is "off" would be nice
too.
Just thought I'd report what I saw. It's in many other ways a very
exciting product.
Chris, you probably know (of at least) Ken Case over at Omni... he's
the lead developer on it, and a very sharp and approachable guy.
Best,
Roger
