If you like, I can help here as the 50ps was part of some past
research. Profile installation is a known gotcha with the user
interface of this software application.
The profile database in the system ICC profiles folder of Windows 2000
Server is not used by the Heidelberg CMM built into the hp designjet
50ps. You may install ICC profiles in the 50ps internal database using
the HTML browser interface from both Mac OS and Windows workstations.
ICC profiles cannot be installed into the internal 50ps database using
the Install Profile command in Windows which only installs the profile
in the profile database managed by the Windows operating system.
(The hp designjet 50ps requires either Windows NT Server, which has no
ICC OS level functionality, or Windows 2000 Server which does, so it
has to come with its own profile database management.)
Moreover, ICC profiles without the suffix *.icc or *.icm cannot be
installed into the internal hp 50ps designjet profile database because
the file on disk is not identified as an ICC profile.
(The third *.pf suffix associated with Kodak software does not behave
consistently either in Windows or in the 50s, as far as I remember. But
you would have to recheck.)
On Mac OS Classic an ICC profile is recognized by the Finder only if it
has the internal Type and Creator tags. Without these internal tags the
Finder cannot automatically place the profile in the OS ICC profile
database, that is, in the ColorSync Profiles folder. Mac OS Classic
does not use the *.icc suffix for profile management, and standard ICC
profiling applications on Mac OS classic do not automatically write the
*.icc suffix into the names of new profiles, so you must manually add
the suffix when naming new and renaming old ICC profiles.
(ColorThink rules -:).)
On Windows 2000 an ICC profile is recognized by the Explorer only if it
has the *.icc or *.icm suffix. Mac OS internal Type and Creator tags
are not recognized for profile management. Therefore, if your ICC
profile appears in the Explorer with the generic Windows icon instead
of the triangular ICC profile icon, right click the profile, select
Rename and manually type the *.icc suffix. The hp designjet 50ps system
can now install the ICC profile into the internal profile database
through the browser interface on a Windows client or the Windows server
where the 50ps software itself is installed.
ICC profiles created on Mac OS Classic and manually given a suffix in
the Finder or Explorer may be moved back and forth between the two
operating system platforms, but ICC profiles created on Windows lack
the Type and Creator tags required on Mac OS Classic and are not
recognized as ICC profiles by the Finder. To add Type and Creator tags
you may use the Make ColorSync Profile utility provided on
http://www.chromix.com/colorsmarts.
Follow these steps to install and uninstall ICC device profiles and ICC
device link profiles into the internal hp designjet 50ps profile
database:
(1) To install an ICC profile using the PrintManager browser interface
on Mac OS or Windows, log in as Administrator and select Settings > ICC
Profiles > Add New ICC Profile.
(2) Open the Type popup and select CMYK to install class prtr CMYK
printer and class link CMYK profiles into the internal database.
(Tip: If you cannot load a profile, check its data space in addition to
its class.)
(3) Open the Type popup and select RGB to install class scnr scanner
and digital camera profiles, class mntr monitor and working space
profiles, class prtr RGB printer profiles and class link RGB profiles.
(4) Open the Type popup and select Local to install class prtr CMYK
printer profiles for the paper type and print mode of the hp designjet
50ps printer configuration.
(5) To uninstall an ICC profile, doubleclick the blue bar tothe left of
the profile name and select the Trash icon in the dialog.
(6) To set a profile as the default for the Type into which you
installed it, doubleclick the blue bar to the left of the profile name
and select the Exclamation icon in the dialog.
Hope this helps.
