To my knowledge the contrary is true.
On Windows systems I found the Gretag Tool "DisplayProfile.exe" to allow
to load unique LUTS to each display "by hand". I use this solution with a
Matrox P650 and a G550. This solution will only work for profiling
packages which use the private Apple vcgt -- "video card gamma tag". The
Gretag software uses this tag also on the win platform and the Quato
silver haze software also uses this tag. basICColor display and the
software for the Spider use own solutions without the vcg-tag.
With this approach (using DisplayProfile to activate the LUT-correction)
I can calibrate two displays, although only one profile will be active in
the windows color settings (in german "Farbverwaltung -- I don't know the
exact english expression for this tab, I think it's labeled "Color
Management") and will be used from CM-aware applications. So it's
possible to use two equal displays and calibrate both of them, while the
profile inside Photoshop is used for both. I haven't tested that on the
Mac, but I think it's the same there too, that Photoshop will only use
one profile. A way to test this is to look at gray ramps and assigning
different test profiles (like those from Bruce Lindbloom --
www.brucelindbloom.com) to a display. On the PC platform you have to
restart Photoshop to make it aware of an updated display profile, while
on the Mac Photoshop "sees" the current RGB Gamma from the profile
without a restart, even after switching to a different profile.
BTW, I really think it's more then overdue to include the support for the
vcgt on the win plattform like it is handled on the Mac. Does someone
have an idea how to contact the right persons at Microsoft to explain
them that a working color management system is much easier to handle
(especially on multi display systems) when no external LUT Loader is
needed -- where every manufactorer comes up with own solutions then, but
the OS will use the vcgt of the profile to do load the correction LUT's
on the graphics card? Such an update should make it as soon as possible
into the next patch of Windows...
Regards
Peter
