Rich,
Here are some quick thoughts for you...
2. Targets. HCT vs. IT8? For IT8's, any preferred source? Several of
the sources I've seen say "Fuji" with no additional info. Is this
Provia, Velvia, or does it make a (big) difference? Can I use the
Velvia (Fuji) profile for Kodachrome? (I haven't seen Kodachrome
targets.)
Not to spend your hard earned money, but if Kodachrome is in your loop
get the HCT (I use the Fuji film stock version), and also a "batch" IT8
target from Fuji
(Provia III) for the Provia/Velvia. I purchased mine through the graphic
arts
division of Fuji. The "custom" Fuji target is not worth the investment IMHO.
Depending
on the Kodachrome original, I generally use the HCT profile, and on a rare
occasion
will use a profile based on Kodak's Kodachrome target (cat# 157 5141).
This can be ordered through any authorized Kodak dealer.
3. Scanning software. Nikon Scan (3.1, with a new 4.0 not yet
installed) seems fine to run as "dumb scanner software" with later
assignment of the profile. I assume I can still use ICE etc. Any
reason to switch scanning software? I'll be using the bulk feeder, and
hope (!) to need little operator intervention in the scanning phase, as
long as the originals are similar. Reasonable?
Yes, use Nikon's dumb software (give it as much ram as you can afford)
and use PS to assign your scanner profile, then convert to your
working space du jour. DO NOT USE ICE when you scan Kodachrome
originals!!!!!
ICE will make the scan look"halo-ed" with certain tonal values. ICE is fine
for
E-6 type films. Certain Kodachrome originals can be a bear to scan...feel
free
to email off-list if you have any other questions.
4. Gamma optimization. (e.g.,
http://www.computer-darkroom.com/gamma/gamma_1.htm) Can this be done
(or should it be done) with the HCT targets?
Depending on how critical you want to be with this type of scanner,
I don't know if this is absolutely necessary. However, be aware that this
type of
scanner will introduce some "flare"....you may want to open the target scan
in PS and enlarge the file to at least 200% to check for the flare. I found
with all
targets I scanned, I had flare with my 4000. I went in and carefully
corrected the
objectionable patches. Then I used the clean version the build my profile.
Regards,
Dan
